THIN LAYER CHROMATOGRAPHIC TECHNIQUES FOR DETECTION OF SUDAN DYES IN PALM OIL

Sudan dyes I, II, III & IV are synthetic, oil-soluble, red-coloured azo dyes. These suspected genotoxic carcinogens and have been used in the adulteration of palm oil products. Many experimental studies on animal specimen confirmed formation tumour due to presence different food In this study, a Simple Thin Layer Chromatographic method is described for qualitative detection Sudan-I, gotten from markets. The study includes extraction sample, preparation Chromatography (TLC) plates, Separation, visualization TLC plates. were extracted with solvent Acetonitrile. Sample extracts decanted analysed by simple thin layer chromatography hexane, chloroform acetic acid system. chromatograms samples standards stained Iron (ii) chloride stain further evaluated term Rf values. Out five values colouring spots three L2, L3 L4, matched (S2). It therefore, concluded that L4 contain dye. Without using any derivation, limit (18mg/L S2 (Sudan dye) 10mg/L SI was determined visually determining if spot visible or not at certain concentration standard dye.
